The headline number
Small and mid-sized businesses increasingly face a choice that used to be invisible: hire people for the back-office jobs that keep a company running, or run those jobs on an AI team. We built a cost model to put a defensible number on both sides.
The six roles we model are the ones an AI business team actually runs — a Boss (coordination), Sales Development, Content Marketer, Research Analyst, Finance Analyst, and Support Lead. Each maps to a real US occupation with a published median wage. The result:
That 98.0% gap is the single most useful figure in this report — and it is fully sourced, not a guess. Every salary below is a published US Bureau of Labor Statistics 2024 median.
How we built the model
We mapped each AI team role to the closest US occupation and used the 2024 median annual wage published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2024). To a base salary we added a standard 25% for employer burden — payroll tax, benefits, and overhead — a conservative figure for a small business (many run higher). The AI side uses the Pro plan at $750/month, which covers all six agents, for 12 months.
Note what we did not do: we did not add recruiting, onboarding, management overhead, or ramp time to the human side. Every one of those would widen the gap further. The model is intentionally conservative in the human's favor.
The wage table (BLS May 2024 medians)
| AI Team Role | Mapped US Occupation | Median Wage | +25% Burden | Annual (1 FTE) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boss (coordination) | First-line supervisor, office & admin support | $66,174 | $16,544 | $82,718 |
| Sales Development | Sales rep, wholesale & mfg (non-technical) | $66,780 | $16,695 | $83,475 |
| Content Marketer | Marketing coordinator | $66,000 | $16,500 | $82,500 |
| Research Analyst | Market research analyst | $76,950 | $19,238 | $96,188 |
| Finance Analyst | Bookkeeping, accounting & auditing clerk | $47,440 | $11,860 | $59,300 |
| Support Lead | Customer service representative | $42,830 | $10,708 | $53,538 |
| Human total (6 FTE, 1 year) | $457,719 | |||
| AI Team (Pro plan, 6 agents, 1 year) | $9,000 | |||
The human total shown is $457,719 before any hiring, software, or management costs. That is the conservative 6-FTE figure — it excludes recruiting, onboarding, and ramp time, all of which would push it higher. The AI team at $9,000 is roughly 51× cheaper per year.
Where the 25% burden comes from
Employer payroll cost is never just salary. Social Security and Medicare (the employer half), federal and state unemployment, workers' compensation, health insurance, and a share of office overhead typically add 20–30% on top of wages for a US small business. We used 25% — the midpoint, and deliberately not the high end.
Why this is a defensible figure (not a marketing claim)
Every salary in the table is a published 2024 BLS median, not a vendor estimate. The only judgment calls are the 25% burden rate (clearly stated, conservative) and the plan price ($750/mo Pro, a published AutomatedAgents price). If you disagree with either, the free calculator lets you change them and watch the total move. The gap holds across a wide range of assumptions.
What the AI team does not replace
This report is about cost, not capability. An AI team runs the repetitive, always-on, time-sensitive work — first responses, draft content, research digests, invoice tracking, ticket triage. It is coordinated by a Boss agent and surfaces only what needs a human decision. It is not a substitute for the founder's relationships, the close, or the judgment calls. The point of the 97% saving is to buy the bandwidth for exactly those things.
Methodology notes & sources
- Wage data: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2024 medians — First-line supervisors of office/admin support ($66,174, Data USA 2024 avg); Sales reps wholesale & mfg non-technical ($66,780); Marketing coordinator ($66,000, Coursera 2026 guide); Market research analyst ($76,950); Bookkeeping/accounting/auditing clerk ($47,440, BLS OES May 2023); Customer service rep ($42,830).
- Employer burden: 25% applied to each median wage (payroll tax, benefits, overhead). Conservative for a US small business.
- AI cost: AutomatedAgents Pro plan, $750/month × 12 = $9,000/year, covering all six agents.
- Excluded (would widen the gap): recruiting, onboarding, training, management time, attrition, software seats per role, and productivity loss during ramp.
- Limitations: Medians, not your local market. Roles are mapped at the closest BLS occupation. Use the calculator to model your own numbers.
